BEGINNER’S GUIDE
TO LLAMA FIBER

Teaching the groundwork up to the spinning stage…

Getting that llama fiber from animal to yarn—wondering where to begin?  Providing hands-on opportunities, we teach you to prepare your llama fleeces for processing from harvest up to the spinning stage.  We tailor our instruction to your level of fiber experience and love teaching the novice.

Depending upon the needs of the participants, this workshop can be extended to up to 6 people.  If taught as a workshop for one or two people, we can target the content to your interests and include additional instruction on wet and dry felting.  You’ll have the opportunity to spend as little or as much hands-on practice as you need in the areas of your interest within the day.  With more people, naturally the class becomes more of a lecture/demonstration situation with the opportunity for questions but less actual hands-on opportunity for each participant.

These workshops are best conducted at out farm although other arrangements may be made depending on the situation and the needs of the group.

We would encourage you to bring whatever fleeces in whatever stage they are in.  Learning about your own “reality” will be more beneficial than speaking about how fleeces should look like.

General topics include: 1) an overall show & tell viewing of our llama herd concentrating on the variety of wool types, styles, & colors & their importance in fiber processing,  2) harvesting llama fiber by brushing and shearing,  3) skirting llama fleeces including guard hair removal and picking,  4) washing llama fleeces,  5) combing, and 6) carding.

This is an All Day (Rain or Shine) Hands-On Workshop running from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. including through the lunch time.  Bring a bag lunch and beverage; we will provide a morning and afternoon snack.  (Please leave young children at home so you and the other participants are not distracted.  And please, NO PETS. – do not plan to leave them in your car!
